Mason Greenwood has emerged as a leading transfer target for Fenerbahce, with both candidates in the club’s presidential election reportedly eager to bring the Marseille forward to Turkey.
Former club president Aziz Yildirim and businessman Hakan Safi are competing to take charge of the Istanbul giants, with the election result expected on Sunday. Regardless of who wins, Greenwood is understood to be a key name on the club’s recruitment agenda.
The 24-year-old’s future at Marseille has come under increasing scrutiny following a challenging spell in recent months. Sporting director Gregory Lorenzi recently confirmed the French club would consider offers for the striker, despite Greenwood still having three years remaining on the contract he signed after joining permanently from Manchester United in July 2024.
Negotiating personal terms is not expected to present any major obstacles should Fenerbahce move forward with a deal.
Greenwood has rebuilt his career abroad after leaving Manchester United. The former England international departed Old Trafford after an internal review concluded he would not return to first-team action, despite criminal charges of attempted rape and assault against him being dropped in February 2023.
His situation continued to attract attention this year when current Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi apologised for comments he made defending Greenwood during their time together at Marseille.
On the pitch, Greenwood has enjoyed strong form in France, scoring 48 goals in 81 appearances for Marseille. He finished the latest Ligue 1 campaign with 16 goals, ending the season joint second in the league’s scoring charts behind Rennes striker Esteban Lepaul.
Fenerbahce are looking to strengthen after finishing runners-up in the Turkish Super Lig for a fifth consecutive season. The club will begin its Champions League campaign in July, entering the competition at the second qualifying round stage.
Manchester United could also benefit financially from any future transfer, having negotiated a significant sell-on clause when Marseille signed Greenwood for €31.6 million (£26.6 million).
The forward has also recently been linked with a possible move to Serie A side Roma.
