FIFA has concluded that video assistant referee (VAR) official Shaun Evans did not intentionally make a political or extremist gesture during a World Cup match, following an investigation into an incident that sparked widespread debate online.
The governing body reviewed footage showing Evans making a hand signal while working during a match at the 2026 World Cup. Some viewers claimed the gesture resembled a symbol that has been associated with white supremacist groups in certain contexts, prompting FIFA to launch a formal review.
After examining the footage and speaking with Evans, FIFA determined there was no evidence that the official intended to communicate any political message, affiliation or ideology. The investigation found the movement was an involuntary and subconscious action rather than a deliberate gesture.
Evans told investigators that the hand movement was not intentional and carried no meaning. FIFA accepted his explanation after reviewing all available evidence and decided no disciplinary action was necessary.
The incident drew significant attention on social media, where clips of the gesture circulated widely and generated speculation about its meaning. However, FIFA’s review concluded that there was no basis for further action against the official.
