England midfielder Jordan Henderson has called on his teammates to fully embrace the challenging conditions in Florida as they prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States.
With most of the squad already based in Florida ahead of next week’s tournament kickoff, England are using the state’s hot and humid climate to help players adjust to the demanding conditions expected during the competition. Five players, including Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka, are due to join the group later this week.
Temperatures reached around 32°C during England’s opening training session in West Palm Beach, and forecasts suggest several World Cup matches could be played in similarly intense heat. Research has indicated that nearly a quarter of tournament games may take place in temperatures above 26°C.
Head coach Thomas Tuchel has placed a strong emphasis on acclimatisation. Reports revealed that he encouraged players to spend part of their post-season break in the United States to adjust to both the climate and time-zone differences. Forward Marcus Rashford was among those who followed that advice.
Henderson, preparing for his seventh major international tournament, believes exposure to the conditions is essential for England’s success.
He explained that the squad must gradually build its ability to perform in the heat, noting that conditions vary significantly across different parts of the country. According to the veteran midfielder, the current training camp and upcoming warm-up matches provide a valuable opportunity for players to adapt before the tournament begins.
England’s support staff have also invested heavily in research and recovery methods, focusing on cooling strategies and physical preparation to help players cope with the demanding environment.
Henderson added that while every team will face the same weather challenges, England can benefit from being as prepared as possible and then focus entirely on their football once the competition starts.
Midfielder Kobbie Mainoo echoed those sentiments, saying the squad is working hard to become comfortable in the heat and humidity as quickly as possible. He admitted the conditions are unlike anything he has previously experienced but is confident the players will feel settled by the time England’s opening match arrives.
England begin their World Cup campaign against Croatia in Dallas, Texas, on 17 June. They will then face Ghana on 23 June in Massachusetts before concluding their Group L fixtures against Panama on 27 June at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
