Fulham head coach Alvaro Arbeloa delivered a severe assessment of his side after Sunderland claimed their first Premier League victory of the season with a 1-0 win at Craven Cottage.
Wilson Isidor proved the difference after coming off the bench in the second half, scoring the decisive goal in the 75th minute as Fulham struggled to create anything against a compact Sunderland defence.
The substitute had already gone close shortly before the breakthrough. Granit Xhaka and Enzo Le Fee combined to create space for Isidor in the centre of the penalty area, but his low effort struck the left post.
Sunderland continued to push and were rewarded when another substitute, Habib Diarra, burst down the right flank before sending a dangerous low ball across goal. Bernd Leno failed to secure the cross, allowing Isidor to react quickly and finish from close range.
The goal completed an important afternoon for the Haiti international, who had also found the net for his country during the summer World Cup.
Fulham offered little response after falling behind. Despite having home advantage, they failed to register a single shot on target and rarely threatened a Sunderland back line that remained disciplined throughout.
Arbeloa, taking charge of only his third competitive game as Fulham manager, was particularly unhappy with the intensity of his players. He felt the team lacked the running, aggression and competitiveness required to control the match, while also falling below expectations technically.
The Spaniard contrasted the performance with Fulham’s opening-weekend 3-2 defeat by Chelsea, when his side had shown considerably more energy and determination. His concern was that the same level of commitment had not carried into a match against Sunderland.
Fulham were repeatedly second best in physical contests and struggled to collect loose balls, leaving Arbeloa frustrated by what he viewed as a broader problem with mentality and ambition.
The result leaves Fulham without a point after their opening two Premier League fixtures, while Sunderland can celebrate their first league win of the campaign after a patient and organised display.
