Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury will finally meet in an all-British heavyweight showdown at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on 11 December, bringing one of British boxing’s longest-running rivalries to the ring.
The fight, which has been discussed for more than a decade, will be shown globally on Netflix. Organisers are considering a late start in Cardiff to better accommodate viewers in the United States, meaning the main event could take place in the early hours of Saturday morning for UK audiences.
Joshua, 36, and Fury, 38, are scheduled to appear together at a London news conference on Wednesday, 30 September, formally launching the build-up to the contest.
Cardiff wins race to stage heavyweight clash
Both former two-time heavyweight world champions signed contracts for the fight earlier this year, but the date and venue had remained unresolved.
Wembley Stadium in London and Madison Square Garden in New York had been among the leading options. However, logistical complications surrounding both venues opened the way for Cardiff to emerge as the preferred choice.
The Principality Stadium has previous experience of staging boxing deep into the night. Joe Calzaghe’s victory over Mikkel Kessler at the venue in November 2007 began at around 01:00 GMT.
Welsh Rugby Union and Cardiff Council officials have welcomed the announcement, viewing the event as another opportunity to strengthen Cardiff’s position as a major international sports destination. They also expect the fight to generate a substantial economic impact for the city, although some operational arrangements are still being finalised.
Joshua had consistently pushed for the contest to take place in the UK, ensuring British supporters would have the opportunity to attend one of the most significant fights of his career.
Alalshikh and White join forces on promotion
The event is being promoted through a collaboration involving Turki Alalshikh’s The Ring and UFC president Dana White, adding another major promotional partnership to the rapidly changing heavyweight boxing landscape.
Alalshikh has played a central role in arranging major international boxing events in recent years and described the Joshua-Fury meeting as one of the biggest fights the sport has produced.
White’s involvement is particularly notable. The UFC chief, who is also fronting Zuffa Boxing, is becoming increasingly active in professional boxing and will now help promote a contest involving two of Britain’s highest-profile fighters.
Joshua and Fury enter the bout with a combined record of 66 victories and 52 knockouts, alongside multiple heavyweight world titles accumulated across their careers.
White’s participation could also create an unusual promotional dynamic. Joshua’s long-time promoter Eddie Hearn had previously expressed reservations about White being involved in the event.
Neither Hearn nor Fury’s promoter Frank Warren was quoted in Netflix’s official announcement, despite their long-standing roles in representing the two fighters.
The December contest will settle a rivalry that repeatedly appeared close to becoming reality before negotiations collapsed or circumstances changed. With contracts signed and Cardiff now confirmed as the host city, Joshua and Fury are finally set to share the ring in a fight that has defined British heavyweight speculation for much of the past decade.
