Kartal Quits Fenerbahce After Roma Draw but Club President Refuses Resignation

Fenerbahce have been thrown into uncertainty after head coach Ismail Kartal announced his resignation only minutes after the club’s 1-1 Champions League draw against Roma.

The 65-year-old revealed his decision during his post-match media duties, bringing an abrupt end to his fourth spell in charge just three months after returning to the Istanbul club.

Kartal had taken over again in June 2026 and guided Fenerbahce back into the Champions League for the first time in 18 years. However, his latest tenure has quickly become turbulent, with the team ninth in the Turkish Super Lig after winning two and losing two of their opening league matches.

The draw with Roma was Fenerbahce’s first game of the Champions League campaign.

Yildirim Rejects Kartal’s Decision

Despite Kartal publicly stepping down, club president Aziz Yildirim has refused to accept the resignation and insists the coach remains in his position.

Yildirim confirmed he spoke directly with Kartal following the press conference and said the demands surrounding the job had played a significant part in the coach’s decision.

The president also revealed that Kartal had been hit by a bottle thrown from the stands during the match, adding another layer to an already tense situation.

Fenerbahce later confirmed that the spectator responsible for the incident had been identified and banned from attending matches at the stadium.

Yildirim strongly criticised the atmosphere surrounding the team, arguing that sustained pressure from sections of the fanbase and media had become damaging. He called for greater respect towards Kartal and made clear that, from the club leadership’s perspective, no managerial change had been approved.

The president maintained that Kartal would continue leading the team while he remained in charge of the club.

Players Caught by Surprise

Kartal’s announcement also appeared to catch his own squad completely off guard.

English defender Archie Brown only learned about the resignation during a post-match interview. Brown had scored Fenerbahce’s equaliser in the 48th minute after Bryan Cristante had put Roma ahead in the first half.

His reaction showed that Kartal’s decision had not been communicated to the players before it became public.

The uncertainty now leaves Fenerbahce in an unusual position, with the coach declaring that he has stepped aside while the club president continues to insist he remains in charge.

Deep Ties With Fenerbahce

Kartal has a long history with Fenerbahce stretching back decades as a player, assistant coach and manager.

He won two Turkish league titles during his playing career with the club and collected six trophies in total. After retiring, he later spent four years working as an assistant coach before moving into the senior managerial role.

During his first spell as head coach, Kartal guided Fenerbahce to the Turkish Super Cup in 2014.

His latest return was expected to begin a new chapter as the club re-entered Europe’s premier competition, but the situation has changed dramatically after just one Champions League fixture.

For now, Kartal considers himself resigned, while Fenerbahce’s president considers him very much still in charge.
