Klopp Emerges as Germany Target After Shock World Cup Exit

Germany are set to approach Jurgen Klopp about becoming their new head coach following their disappointing 2026 World Cup campaign.

The German Football Association (DFB) is considering a major change after Julian Nagelsmann’s side suffered a surprise elimination in the round of 32, losing to Paraguay on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Klopp, 59, is currently working as Red Bull’s global head of soccer, a position he accepted after leaving Liverpool in 2024. However, the former Borussia Dortmund manager has repeatedly insisted he is not looking for an immediate return to coaching.

Despite that, senior figures within German football view Klopp as their preferred candidate if they decide to replace Nagelsmann, who has faced growing pressure following Germany’s early World Cup exit.

Klopp remains one of the most successful German coaches of his generation. During his time at Liverpool, he won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup and Club World Cup, while he previously guided Borussia Dortmund to two Bundesliga titles.

Nagelsmann took charge of Germany in 2023 after Hansi Flick was dismissed and helped rebuild confidence around the national team ahead of Euro 2024. However, the World Cup failure has raised fresh questions about the team’s direction.

The DFB must now decide whether to continue with Nagelsmann or attempt to convince Klopp to take on the national team role for the first time in his career.

Germany’s next major tournament will be Euro 2028, giving the federation time to reshape its plans as it looks to return the four-time world champions to the top of international football.
