Rubin Colwill came off the bench to rescue Cardiff City with a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser in a 1-1 Welsh derby draw against Wrexham at the Cardiff City Stadium.
Cardiff entered their opening Championship fixture of the season under pressure after falling behind early to former Bluebirds striker Kieffer Moore. Wrexham created further opportunities to extend their advantage but failed to turn their dominance into a second goal.
Cardiff struggled to produce a decisive moment in attack for much of the contest, prompting head coach Brian Barry-Murphy to make several changes after the hour mark. Colwill was among those introduced despite having only recently returned to full training following an ankle problem that disrupted his pre-season.
The decision proved decisive.
With Wrexham closing in on three points, Colwill stepped up in the eighth minute of added time and drove a free-kick into the net to secure Cardiff’s first point of the new campaign.
Barry-Murphy later acknowledged that using the Wales international for such a long spell represented a calculated risk. Colwill had completed only two full days of training before the derby, and Cardiff’s staff remain cautious about increasing his workload too quickly.
However, the coach felt his side needed a different attacking influence as the match progressed, with Colwill capable of carrying the ball and creating danger from deeper positions.
Cardiff will now carefully manage the midfielder’s return as he works towards full match fitness. Barry-Murphy regards the 24-year-old as an important figure within the squad but does not want to expose him to unnecessary injury risk after his limited preparation.
The late goal transformed the mood inside the stadium, with Cardiff’s celebrations reflecting the significance of denying Wrexham victory so deep into stoppage time.
Barry-Murphy was also booked during the celebrations after leaving his technical area. While the caution added a minor complication to the evening, the dramatic finish ensured Cardiff began their Championship campaign with a point from a match that had appeared lost only moments earlier.
