Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has agreed a new contract that will keep him in charge of the national team until 2032, extending his tenure by another four years.
The 65-year-old had previously been under contract until 2028, but his latest agreement means he is now expected to lead Spain through their defence of the World Cup on home soil in 2030.
Spain will stage the tournament alongside Portugal and Morocco, while Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay will host selected matches as part of celebrations marking 100 years since the inaugural World Cup in 1930.
De la Fuente has strengthened his position considerably since replacing Luis Enrique in December 2022 following Spain’s last-16 elimination from that year’s World Cup.
Under his leadership, Spain have developed into one of international football’s most successful sides, losing only twice across 41 competitive fixtures and collecting three major trophies.
His first senior title came in the 2022-23 UEFA Nations League. Spain then won a record fourth European Championship in 2024, defeating England 2-1 in the final.
De la Fuente added the biggest prize of his career in July 2026 when Spain beat Argentina 1-0 after extra time to secure the country’s second men’s World Cup title.
Spain also reached the final of the 2024-25 Nations League, where they finished runners-up to Portugal.
Royal Spanish Football Federation president Rafael Louzan confirmed that negotiations over the extended deal were being completed and said De la Fuente’s achievements had earned him improved financial terms.
Louzan also highlighted De la Fuente’s long association with the federation. Before taking charge of the senior team, he spent nine years working within Spain’s youth structure.
During that period, he guided Spain to the European Under-19 Championship in 2015 and the European Under-21 Championship in 2019, while also leading the Olympic side to a silver medal at the Tokyo Games in 2021.
De la Fuente had previously worked in Spain’s lower divisions before beginning his long spell within the national-team system.
His new contract provides Spain with long-term continuity through the 2030 World Cup cycle and beyond, with the coach now positioned to remain in the role until he is 71.
Spain’s next match is scheduled for 26 September, when they face England at Wembley in their opening fixture of the 2026-27 UEFA Nations League.
