Mac Allister Admits Liverpool Contract Snub Left Him Disappointed

Alexis Mac Allister has revealed his disappointment at Liverpool’s decision not to offer him a new contract, while confirming he had opportunities to leave the club during the summer transfer window.

The Argentina midfielder joined Liverpool from Brighton in June 2023 on a five-year agreement and remains under contract until 2028. However, the 27-year-old has watched fellow midfielders Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch secure extensions this year without receiving a similar proposal.

Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League meeting with Atletico Madrid, Mac Allister made clear that he remains committed to the club despite being unhappy with the situation surrounding his future.

He said he has continued to give everything in training and matches and intends to maintain that approach for as long as he remains at Anfield. Although pleased to see Szoboszlai and Gravenberch rewarded with new deals, he admitted their extensions had also highlighted his own unresolved position.

Mac Allister added that Liverpool supporters should not question his commitment, stressing that his performances and effort will not be affected by the contract uncertainty.

Summer Exit Was an Option

The midfielder confirmed that possible moves away from Liverpool were available during the summer, but he ultimately decided staying on Merseyside was the right choice.

Mac Allister has previously been linked with Manchester City, although he did not identify which clubs had shown interest.

He also said he had not been directly involved in discussions with Liverpool over the club’s decision not to offer improved terms. Despite that lack of communication, he remains positive about his relationship with Liverpool and the city.

Mac Allister has already experienced major success at Anfield, playing an important role in the side that won the Premier League title in the 2024-25 campaign. He also pointed to the difficult periods the squad has experienced together as part of the strong connection he feels with the club.

The World Cup winner does not believe he needs to prove his value but accepts that maintaining a high level of performance will be important as Liverpool assess his long-term future.

Iraola Backs Midfielder’s Importance

Mac Allister made 55 appearances in all competitions last season, six more than during Liverpool’s title-winning campaign, although he acknowledged that both his individual form and the team’s overall performance fell below expectations.

Liverpool finished fifth in the Premier League and subsequently dismissed Arne Slot, with Andoni Iraola appointed as his replacement during the summer.

Iraola initially used Mac Allister from the bench in Liverpool’s opening league match at Newcastle but has since restored him to the starting line-up for the following two fixtures.

The new Liverpool manager has played down concerns surrounding the midfielder’s contract, indicating that individual players inevitably face different situations regarding their agreements. Iraola views Mac Allister as an important member of the squad and believes there remains plenty of time for his future to be addressed.

Mac Allister has also responded positively to Liverpool’s new direction under Iraola. Since returning for pre-season, he has been impressed by the Spaniard’s coaching methods, tactical clarity and approach to training.

Although the pair have not discussed the midfielder’s contract, Mac Allister believes Liverpool can enjoy a successful campaign if the squad adapts fully to Iraola’s ideas.

For now, his immediate focus remains on performing for Liverpool, even as uncertainty continues over whether the club will eventually offer him a new long-term deal.
