Manchester City have completed the signing of Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea for £125 million, matching the British transfer record and pushing the club’s summer spending to an unprecedented Premier League level.
The 25-year-old’s move takes City’s total expenditure during the current window to £458 million, surpassing Liverpool’s £415 million outlay from last summer. City have partly balanced that spending by generating around £300 million through player sales.
Fernandez’s £125 million fee equals the amount Liverpool paid Newcastle United for Alexander Isak on transfer deadline day last year. It also represents another major increase in value for the midfielder, who joined Chelsea from Benfica in January 2023 for a then-British record £107 million.
City and Chelsea held intensive negotiations over the previous 24 hours before reaching an agreement on Tuesday.
Fernandez Ends Turbulent Chelsea Spell
Fernandez had been seeking a move away from Stamford Bridge for several months, with Real Madrid initially his preferred destination. However, the Spanish club later publicly ruled out making an offer.
His relationship with sections of the Chelsea support deteriorated during the summer. He was booed during a friendly against Real Sociedad and again after appearing from the bench in the Premier League opener at Fulham.
Fernandez was also absent from Chelsea’s 2-0 Carabao Cup win against Luton and the 4-3 league victory over Brighton. Reports in Argentina indicated that he had asked not to be included while uncertainty over his future continued.
Following confirmation of his departure, Fernandez published a farewell message reflecting on a difficult period at Chelsea while expressing gratitude for the trophies, victories and experiences he shared with the club.
Chelsea had attempted to settle his future before the new campaign by setting a 14 August deadline for offers worth at least £120 million. Although the club initially hoped to retain him, Fernandez had reportedly remained determined to leave since March.
Maresca Reunited With Former Chelsea Midfielder
The transfer reunites Fernandez with Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca, who previously coached him during his spell in charge of Chelsea.
City have undergone a major midfield rebuild this summer after several established players left the Etihad Stadium. Tijjani Reijnders joined Al-Qadsiah for £52 million, Rodri moved to Barcelona for £65 million and Nico Gonzalez signed for Newcastle United in another £52 million deal.
Bernardo Silva also departed before later joining Real Madrid on a free transfer.
Fernandez arrives as one of the centrepieces of City’s reconstruction and has outlined his ambition to continue competing for major trophies while developing alongside his new teammates.
His arrival marks the second time this summer that Manchester City have broken their club transfer record. The previous benchmark had been set only in July when midfielder Elliot Anderson joined from Nottingham Forest for £116 million.
Fernandez is now the fourth player to complete a Premier League transfer worth at least £100 million during the window. Morgan Rogers joined Chelsea for £117 million, Liverpool signed Bradley Barcola for £123 million and City paid £116 million for Anderson.
City Spending Nears Half a Billion Pounds
Manchester City’s recruitment has extended well beyond Fernandez and Anderson.
The club paid £86 million for 18-year-old Lille midfielder Ayoub Bouaddi and £34 million for Brazilian winger Allan Elias, while Jeremy Monga and goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli arrived for smaller fees.
City’s spending could climb further, with Everton winger Iliman Ndiaye expected to join after the clubs agreed a package worth up to £65 million.
The scale of the recruitment has been offset by substantial outgoing business. In addition to the midfield departures, City sold Savio to Tottenham for £75 million. They are also due to receive £60 million next summer when Omar Marmoush’s loan transfer to Spurs becomes permanent.
Chelsea Sales Pass £400m
For Chelsea, Fernandez becomes one of the most lucrative departures in the club’s history. His £125 million transfer is second only to the overall value associated with Eden Hazard’s move to Real Madrid in 2019.
The deal is also set to help Chelsea establish a new Premier League record for income generated from player sales during a single summer.
Fernandez’s exit follows Nicolas Jackson’s £65 million move to Aston Villa and Liam Delap’s £50 million transfer to Nottingham Forest. Chelsea’s total sales for the window are now expected to exceed £400 million, comfortably above the approximately £300 million they generated last season.
Reducing the size of the squad had become a major priority after Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League and missed out on European qualification.
With Fernandez now gone, the club have completed another major sale while Manchester City have secured one of the most expensive midfielders in football history as part of their extensive summer overhaul.
