Manchester United have strengthened their midfield by completing the signing of Belgium international Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa after triggering the 29-year-old’s £35 million release clause.
Tielemans has signed a five-year contract at Old Trafford following three seasons with Villa, where he established himself as one of the Premier League’s most consistent midfielders. He previously spent four years at Leicester City after joining from Monaco in 2019.
The Belgian arrives after helping his national team reach the World Cup quarter-finals, although his tournament ended early after he suffered an injury during the warm-up before Belgium’s defeat to Spain.
Tielemans will wear the number 18 shirt, which became available following Casemiro’s departure at the end of his contract.
Despite still being in his twenties, the midfielder brings a wealth of experience, having made 668 senior appearances for club and country and scoring 79 goals. His career highlights include netting Leicester City’s winning goal in the 2021 FA Cup final against Chelsea and helping Aston Villa lift the Europa League trophy with victory over Freiburg earlier this year.
Last season, calf and ankle injuries restricted Tielemans to 35 appearances in all competitions, his lowest total since arriving in England. Even so, he remained an influential figure and also enjoyed memorable moments with Belgium at the World Cup, scoring a dramatic late equaliser against Senegal before converting the extra-time winning penalty in a 3-2 victory.
Manchester United’s football leadership described Tielemans as one of the Premier League’s most reliable midfielders in recent years, highlighting his technical quality, composure, creativity and leadership.
The move continues United’s busy summer transfer window following the arrivals of midfielder Andrey Santos and goalkeeper Karl Darlow, while negotiations for Atalanta midfielder Ederson have been placed on hold.
Tielemans’ transfer also reflects Manchester United’s increasingly data-driven recruitment strategy. The club had previously considered signing him when he left Monaco in 2019 and again after his Leicester City contract expired in 2023, but decided against making a move on both occasions.
This summer, midfield reinforcement remained the club’s top priority. United explored several options, including Mateus Fernandes, whose proposed transfer from West Ham eventually collapsed. Rather than exceeding their valuation, the club remained disciplined and turned to alternative targets identified through their recruitment process.
While Tielemans is older than some of the initial candidates, United believe his extensive Premier League experience and proven consistency outweigh any concerns over age.
He is expected to compete primarily with Kobbie Mainoo in a box-to-box midfield role, while fellow new signing Andrey Santos is viewed as a deeper defensive midfielder. Manchester United are still expected to add another experienced midfielder capable of operating in a holding role and contributing in the Champions League.
