Mbappe and Lamine Yamal set for defining World Cup showdown as France face Spain

France and Spain meet in Dallas on Tuesday with a place in the 2026 World Cup final on the line, as two of international football’s biggest stars prepare for another chapter in their growing rivalry.

The semi-final pits the reigning European champions against the 2018 world champions. France are chasing a third consecutive World Cup final appearance, while Spain are aiming to become only the fourth nation to hold both the European Championship and World Cup titles simultaneously.

Much of the attention will focus on Kylian Mbappe and Lamine Yamal, two players representing different stages of football’s changing generation.

Mbappe announced himself on the world stage during France’s victorious 2018 World Cup campaign, memorably scoring twice against Lionel Messi’s Argentina in the last 16 before helping Les Bleus claim the trophy. Eight years later, Yamal hopes to produce his own defining World Cup moment after a relatively quiet tournament by his high standards.

The French captain arrives in exceptional form. After scoring 42 goals in 44 matches for Real Madrid last season to finish as both La Liga and Champions League top scorer, Mbappe has carried that momentum into the World Cup. He shares the Golden Boot lead with Lionel Messi on eight goals, while his 11 goal contributions are the most of any player at the tournament.

Mbappe has now scored 19 World Cup goals in his career, trailing only Messi’s record of 20 after surpassing Miroslav Klose’s long-standing mark of 16. He also became France’s all-time leading scorer earlier this year, moving ahead of Olivier Giroud with 64 international goals in 104 appearances.

Despite his remarkable personal achievements, the 27-year-old is still chasing his first major trophy with Real Madrid following two trophyless seasons since arriving in Spain. His determination to add another World Cup title remains one of his biggest motivations as he continues his pursuit of Pele’s record of three tournament victories.

Former France striker Olivier Giroud recently described Mbappe’s rise as the product of unwavering ambition and confidence, while observers have also praised the forward’s increased defensive work during this tournament, which has helped France press opponents more effectively.

Spanish teenager Lamine Yamal, meanwhile, celebrated his 19th birthday on Monday but has already established himself among football’s brightest talents. After helping Spain win Euro 2024 and finishing runner-up in last year’s Ballon d’Or voting, he entered the World Cup following a hamstring injury that interrupted his preparations.

The Barcelona star has scored once in five starts and has not produced the same attacking numbers as Mbappe, Messi or England’s Jude Bellingham. However, Spain coach Luis de la Fuente has urged patience, insisting the youngster’s defining World Cup moment is still to come.

Spain have also adjusted their tactical approach because both Yamal and Nico Williams have not been fully fit. Rather than relying heavily on pace and direct wing play, the European champions have focused more on controlling possession, leaving Yamal to operate in tighter spaces against multiple defenders.

Even so, the teenager remains central to Spain’s attack. He completed more successful dribbles than Mbappe during the tournament and has contributed significantly without the ball, recording eight tackles compared with Mbappe’s one while winning possession high up the pitch twice as often.

In contrast, Mbappe has been far more clinical in front of goal. He has converted eight of his 30 attempts, while Yamal has scored once from 23 shots. The Frenchman has also supplied three assists and created 11 more chances, although Yamal’s expected assist numbers suggest his teammates have failed to convert several high-quality opportunities.

The pair have already shared memorable encounters. Yamal scored in Spain’s 2-1 victory over France in the Euro 2024 semi-finals, while both players found the net again when Spain edged France 5-4 in last year’s UEFA Nations League semi-final.

Across their previous 10 meetings, Yamal has finished on the winning side eight times. Mbappe, however, has scored nine goals in those matches, compared with six for the Spanish youngster.

France’s only previous World Cup meeting with Spain came in the 2006 round of 16, when the French recovered from behind to win 3-1. Tuesday’s semi-final promises far greater stakes, with the winner moving one step away from lifting the World Cup trophy in New Jersey on 19 July.
