Newcastle Complete £51.4m Deal for Lille Forward Matias Fernandez-Pardo

Newcastle United have completed the signing of Belgium international Matias Fernandez-Pardo from Lille for an initial fee of £51.4 million.

The 21-year-old forward arrived on Tyneside on Monday evening before undergoing his medical and finalising a long-term contract with the Premier League club.

Fernandez-Pardo had been identified as a priority target by Newcastle, with the club’s interest stretching back to the tenure of former head coach Eddie Howe. His age, versatility and attacking potential fit closely with the profile Newcastle have been pursuing in the transfer market.

Head coach Matthias Jaissle played a significant role in convincing the forward to make the move, outlining how he would fit into Newcastle’s plans and how the club intends to support his development.

Fernandez-Pardo joins after an unsettled final period at Lille. He was omitted from the squad for last week’s 2-2 draw with Paris Saint-Germain and was instructed to train separately from the senior group while negotiations over his future continued.

Despite being only 21, the Belgian produced some of the strongest attacking numbers among young players in Europe’s major leagues last season.

Among players aged 21 or younger across Europe’s top five divisions, Fernandez-Pardo ranked second for big chances with 21. He was also fifth for touches inside the opposition penalty area with 184 and shots on target with 30, while his combined total of 13 goals and assists placed him seventh.

His ability to operate in several positions across the attacking line was another major factor behind Newcastle’s decision to pursue the deal.

Jaissle sees Fernandez-Pardo as a technically gifted and explosive forward capable of creating opportunities, scoring goals and beating defenders in one-on-one situations. Newcastle also believe there is significant room for further development as he adapts to Premier League football.

The move gives Jaissle another flexible attacking option as Newcastle continue reshaping their squad around younger players with long-term potential.
