Neymar has announced the end of his international career after Brazil’s World Cup campaign came to a disappointing finish with a defeat against Norway.
The 34-year-old forward confirmed after the match that he no longer plans to represent his country, bringing an end to a historic spell with the national team.
Neymar leaves Brazil as the country’s all-time leading goalscorer, having surpassed Pele’s long-standing record. Since making his senior debut in 2010, he became the face of a generation and one of the most influential players in Brazilian football history.
Despite his individual achievements, the World Cup trophy remained out of reach. Neymar featured in four tournaments but was unable to guide Brazil to a sixth global title.
His final appearance came as Brazil were eliminated by Norway, a result that ended another frustrating campaign for one of football’s most successful nations.
Speaking after the defeat, Neymar admitted his journey with the national side had reached its conclusion, saying the moment had arrived for a new generation of players to lead Brazil forward.
The forward’s international career included major highs, most notably winning Olympic gold on home soil in Rio in 2016. He also helped Brazil claim the Confederations Cup in 2013.
Neymar’s departure marks the end of an era for Brazil, with the team now facing a transition period as it looks to rebuild without its most recognisable star of the past decade.
