Rio Ngumoha’s brief spell with England’s senior squad may be coming to an end, but the Liverpool teenager has left a lasting impression on manager Thomas Tuchel and his international team-mates.
The 17-year-old forward, who was not included in England’s final 26-man World Cup squad, caught the eye during the team’s training camp in the United States and capped his unexpected opportunity with an impressive debut appearance against New Zealand. Introduced as a second-half substitute in England’s 1-0 World Cup warm-up victory, Ngumoha delivered a standout display that earned him the man-of-the-match award.
England face Costa Rica in their final pre-tournament friendly on Wednesday before departing for their World Cup base in Kansas City, Missouri. While Tuchel now has a full squad available following the arrival of Arsenal players Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke, there remains interest in whether Ngumoha could feature one more time before returning to club duties.
Originally invited to the Florida training camp simply as one of several supplementary players, Ngumoha exceeded expectations. His performances in training reportedly convinced Tuchel to hand him minutes against New Zealand, a decision that was quickly justified by the teenager’s maturity and attacking threat.
His emergence has prompted debate over whether he should have been considered for England’s World Cup squad. Some observers have argued that he could have earned a place in the final selection or at least been positioned as a potential injury replacement. However, because Ngumoha was not named in Tuchel’s preliminary 55-player squad, tournament regulations prevent him from being called up as a replacement before the competition begins.
The situation has raised further questions given that Tuchel had previously suggested he was open to selecting the Liverpool youngster when discussing his options earlier this year.
Despite the excitement surrounding his England breakthrough, Ngumoha’s senior experience remains limited. The London-born attacker made history last season as Liverpool’s youngest goalscorer when he netted a dramatic 100th-minute winner in a 3-2 victory over Newcastle. However, he started only 10 senior matches during the campaign.
There was reported frustration over his lack of opportunities under former Liverpool manager Arne Slot, although the club maintained that a cautious approach was necessary to protect a player experiencing his first full season around Premier League and Champions League football.
