Premier League players are already having to keep an eye on the disciplinary table, with the competition’s yellow-card suspension rules applying throughout the season.
Any player who collects five bookings before their club completes its 19th league match receives an automatic one-game ban. Just four rounds into the current campaign, three players have already been shown three yellow cards, leaving them only two cautions away from the first suspension threshold.
Once a club has played 19 league matches, the five-card limit no longer applies. The next benchmark is 10 yellow cards, with players who reach that total before the end of their team’s 32nd Premier League fixture handed a two-match suspension.
Further sanctions remain in place later in the season. A player accumulating 15 yellow cards is banned for three matches, while anyone reaching 20 cautions is referred to a regulatory commission, which decides the appropriate punishment.
The disciplinary totals remain active for the entire Premier League campaign rather than being wiped at individual checkpoints.
Similar rules operate across the Championship, League One and League Two, although the longer 46-game schedules mean the deadlines are different.
Players in those three divisions must stay below 10 yellow cards through their club’s first 37 league fixtures to avoid a two-match suspension.
Unlike in the Premier League, yellow-card totals in the EFL are cleared at the end of the regular season. Bookings collected during play-off matches are also treated separately from the regular-season disciplinary record.
