Tottenham swept aside Charlton Athletic at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with new signing Savio scoring on his debut as Roberto De Zerbi’s side secured a place in the third round of the Carabao Cup wtih score 5-1.
The Brazilian winger, who joined Spurs from Manchester City for an initial £75m, started on the bench before entering in the 71st minute with Tottenham already three goals ahead. He needed only 11 minutes to make his mark, beating two defenders before finishing from the edge of the penalty area to make it 4-0.
Savio was also involved in Tottenham’s fifth goal, scored by Ben Davies in the 85th minute, as Spurs produced a convincing response to their disappointing Premier League defeat against Brentford.
Tottenham had initially found it difficult to break down a heavily rotated Charlton side. The breakthrough finally arrived in the 41st minute when 19-year-old Mikey Moore struck powerfully from outside the box into the top corner. It was his first goal for Spurs since January 2025.
Dominic Solanke doubled the advantage shortly before half-time, turning inside the area before finding the net with his right foot in the 45th minute.
De Zerbi had made five changes from the team beaten at the weekend, including a first Tottenham start for Portugal midfielder Mateus Fernandes following his £85m transfer from West Ham.
Fernandes contributed to the third goal in the 67th minute, delivering the free-kick from which substitute Kevin Danso headed home from around 15 yards. Danso was injured in the process and required treatment before leaving the field.
Charlton had made 10 changes from the starting XI that defeated West Ham in their previous match and were also forced into two early substitutions after defenders Collins Sichenje and Billy Koumetio picked up injuries.
Despite those setbacks, the visitors created the better chances during the opening stages. Captain Greg Docherty tested Tottenham goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky, while Nathan Asiimwe sent a header narrowly wide before Moore changed the direction of the match.
Charlton eventually rewarded their 6,000 travelling supporters with a late goal as Lloyd Jones scored in the 87th minute, but it did little to affect a comfortable Tottenham victory.
The result sends Spurs into a third-round Carabao Cup meeting with Liverpool. Their next Premier League fixture is at home against Newcastle on Saturday at 17:30 BST, with the club also hoping to complete a loan deal for Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush before then.
