Scaloni Hints at Argentina Exit After Emotional World Cup Final Defeat

Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has cast fresh doubt over his future after becoming emotional during his post-match press conference following his side’s World Cup final defeat to Spain.

The 48-year-old watched Argentina’s hopes of defending their world title end as Spain secured a 1-0 extra-time victory, with Ferran Torres scoring the decisive goal to complete a historic double for the European champions after their Euro triumph.

Scaloni had been aiming to become only the second manager to successfully retain the FIFA World Cup after guiding Argentina to glory in Qatar in 2022. Instead, his team fell just short, and the disappointment appeared to leave the coach questioning whether he is ready to continue.

His current contract with the Argentine Football Association runs until December, and when asked about his plans, Scaloni admitted he will first hold discussions with federation president Claudio Tapia before making a decision.

Holding back tears, Scaloni said he already has an idea of what he would like to do but believes he needs time to reflect before committing to another cycle with the national team. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead Argentina, describing the role as a dream, while praising both his coaching staff and players for giving everything throughout their journey.

The emotional coach also suggested that rebuilding another squad capable of competing at the highest level would require significant mental energy and motivation. He said restarting the process and creating another group with the same spirit and unity would be an enormous challenge.

As the press conference continued, Scaloni struggled to continue speaking through his emotions, admitting he was unsure whether he could carry on in the role. Moments later, he stood up, apologized to reporters, and ended the session early, saying the defeat was deeply painful.

Scaloni has led Argentina through one of the most successful periods in the nation’s history, delivering the 2021 Copa América, the 2022 Finalissima and the 2022 FIFA World Cup, before guiding the team back to another World Cup final in 2026. His comments now leave uncertainty over whether that remarkable era is coming to an end.
