Smalling Joins Porto on Short-Term Deal After Saudi Exit

Former Manchester United and England defender Chris Smalling has joined Porto on a contract running until the end of the season.

The 36-year-old had been a free agent since leaving Saudi Pro League side Al-Fayha during the summer. He had also been linked with Rangers before completing his move to Portugal.

Porto have included an option to extend Smalling’s deal by a further year.

The centre-back arrives with Porto top of the Portuguese league after winning all seven of their opening matches. Francesco Farioli’s side hold a five-point lead over Benfica, although they began their Champions League campaign with a home defeat against Manchester City.

Smalling’s move allows him to continue a professional career that has lasted almost two decades. He began at non-league Maidstone before moving to Fulham and then Manchester United.

During his time at Old Trafford, Smalling won five major trophies, including two Premier League titles. He later joined Roma and was part of the team that won the UEFA Conference League under Jose Mourinho in 2022.

Smalling also made 31 appearances for England during his international career.
