Sunderland have strengthened their squad with the signing of experienced Belgium international Thomas Meunier on a two-year contract following the expiry of his deal with French club Lille.

The 34-year-old arrives on Wearside after an accomplished career across Europe’s top leagues, becoming Sunderland’s first addition of the summer transfer window.

Meunier has made more than 550 senior appearances during spells with Club Brugge, Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund, Trabzonspor and Lille. During his time in Paris, he collected three Ligue 1 titles as part of a trophy-laden spell with PSG.

At international level, the defender has earned 83 caps for Belgium and was part of the squad at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

His arrival follows the departures of forward Eliezer Mayenda and midfielder Dan Neil as Sunderland continue reshaping their squad ahead of the new campaign.

Director of football Florent Ghisolfi said the club identified Meunier as an ideal addition thanks to his experience, leadership and winning mentality. He believes the Belgian’s ability at both ends of the pitch and his professionalism will provide a valuable influence within the dressing room.

Meunier is set to join his new teammates in early August and is looking forward to playing in the Premier League while helping Sunderland compete in European competition for the first time in 53 years.

The defender said the opportunity to play in one of the world’s strongest leagues was a major attraction. He added that Sunderland’s long-term vision, ambition and return to European football convinced him to begin the next chapter of his career at the Stadium of Light.

Meunier also believes his experience can benefit the squad on and off the field as the Black Cats prepare for a demanding season across domestic and continental competitions.
