Switzerland reached the last 16 of the World Cup with a confident 2-0 victory over Algeria, claiming their first knockout-stage win at the tournament since 1938.
Breel Embolo opened the scoring after just 10 minutes in Vancouver following an outstanding piece of play from Johan Manzambi. The Freiburg winger beat his marker before sending a perfect cutback into the box, leaving Embolo with a simple finish.
Switzerland remained in control and strengthened their advantage almost immediately after the restart, with Dan Ndoye scoring just 46 seconds into the second half with a composed strike from inside the area.
It marked the first time since 1954 that Switzerland had scored multiple goals in a World Cup knockout match. Algeria, who were chasing their first-ever knockout victory, had a promising spell before half-time but struggled to create clear chances. Fares Chaibi’s effort, comfortably saved by Gregor Kobel, proved to be one of their few real opportunities.
Captain Granit Xhaka made his 150th appearance for Switzerland and played a key role in a dominant midfield display. The 33-year-old provided control and experience as Murat Yakin’s team rarely looked under pressure.
While Xhaka guided the side, Manzambi once again showed why he has become one of the tournament’s breakout stars. The 20-year-old’s assist for Embolo added to his three group-stage goals and took him to five direct goal contributions at the World Cup.
According to Opta, Manzambi is the first Swiss player to reach that figure at a World Cup since detailed records began in 1966. He is also the youngest player from any country to achieve the milestone during that period.
Switzerland almost added a third late on when Fabian Rieder found space at the back post, but his mistimed effort went straight to goalkeeper Luca Zidane.
The result sends Switzerland into the last 16 for the fourth consecutive World Cup, where they will face either Colombia or Ghana on 7 July at BC Place in Vancouver.
