Jude Bellingham faces strong competition to secure a place in England’s starting line-up at the 2026 World Cup, according to head coach Thomas Tuchel.
Despite being regarded as one of England’s top talents, the England Men’s Football Team midfielder has started only four matches since Tuchel took charge in January 2025, while making three additional appearances as a substitute. Morgan Rogers has emerged as one of the manager’s preferred options, featuring in 12 of Tuchel’s 13 games in charge and playing a role in every World Cup qualifier.
Tuchel said competition for places is intense, with around 14 or 15 players capable of being regular starters. While he considers Bellingham among that group, he stressed that positions in the team are not guaranteed and can change depending on form and circumstances.
The situation marks a contrast from Euro 2024, when Bellingham started all seven of England’s matches and missed only 29 minutes throughout the tournament. Since then, injuries and selection decisions have limited his involvement. A shoulder problem ruled him out of two qualifiers last September, he was left out of the October squad, and a hamstring issue prevented him from taking part in March friendlies.
Bellingham’s relationship with Tuchel has also attracted attention over the past year. The England manager previously criticised the midfielder’s behaviour during a defeat to Senegal before later apologising, and he also questioned the player’s reaction after being substituted in a qualifier against Albania.
However, Tuchel was encouraged by Bellingham’s display in England’s 1-0 World Cup warm-up victory over New Zealand. The 22-year-old came on at half-time, later captaining the side, and impressed with his energy and determination after returning from injury.
The manager believes Bellingham is arriving at the World Cup in excellent condition, refreshed after a difficult spell on the sidelines that disrupted both his season with Real Madrid and England’s preparations. Tuchel feels the midfielder is now fully fit, motivated and ready to challenge for a leading role in the tournament.
